Who’s the
pigeon here?
Follow our tips
for a unique
and clean experience
Hello, I’m a pigeon. I eat on the ground, make a mess of streets and monuments, gather in groups on statues and bathe in fountains. Please don’t take my actions as exemplary.
A hardworking team does its best to keep Florence clean every day – and we’re not just talking about our sanitation workers! While they sweep the streets and collect garbage, they receive support from volunteer association Angeli del Bello, which helps to make Florence a cleaner city to live in and visit. We must all play our part too by following some basic rules to keep Florence beautiful, some of whichhappen to be laws, so disrespecting them incurs fines.
Use the garbage cans. Small bins (for equally small waste) are found around the city.
Usepublic washroom facilities. Bars and restaurants have facilities for their customers, of course.
If you’re artistically inspired, get a sketchbook, but please don’t leave graffiti on Florence’s walls or works of art. This is a serious crime.
Avoid hazardous actions, like walking into fountains, climbing statues or sitting over the edge of bridges or even swim in the Arno. You risk hurting yourself and the art, and it won’t go unnoticed on security cameras.
Finally, please don’t eat while sitting on the sidewalk or storefronts. Find a bench or a park for your picnic.
Pigeons may have their heads in the clouds, but you should always keep your eyes wide open: pay attention to your personal belongings, especially on public transport and in crowded areas, and avoid potentially risky behavior.

Florence is alive

While at first glance Florence looks like an open-air museum, stay a moment and you’ll find that it is a living, breathing organism made up of people and place, of centuries of history and traditions. As such, Florence needs to be treated with care…
